YOUTH GROUP

At FCC Tyler, we strive to be a welcome and open place for youth who are at various places on their spiritual journey. Through worship, service, learning, and having fun as a community of faith, we hope that you will find a place here.
Some Sunday nights are set aside for outreach and for fellowship so keep your eyes and ears open for what's going on.

Chi Rho: 6th–8th grade group

CYF: 9th–12th grade group

The Youth at First Christian have many activities to choose from. In addition to our Sunday programs, we also have a variety of sports, games, chill out time, Bible study, concerts, Mission trips, dinners, and pool parties to name a few.

A typical Sunday looks like this:
9:30am - Worship (Contemporary and Traditional are concurrent)
10:50am - Sunday School (Middle School and High School)

QUARENTINE RESOURCES

A note of encouragement...
Friends,

I wanted to write you a quick note of encouragement.  It must seem pretty weird to suddenly be out of school with no sense of when you might return.  I’m a big fan of education, and I hope each of you will take advantage of the many resources being made available online, to continue learning.  It’s also important to maintain a spiritual connection.
It looks like we’ll be staying home and staying apart for a while.  It isn’t clear when we’ll be able to return to normal, or what “normal” will look like, but this isn’t the end of the world.  The world as we know it is changing, it can’t help but change.  How it turns out will be, in part, up to you.
In every generation, there are events that help define us, events that leave a lasting impact.  You will always remember this time in your life, where you were, what you did, during the Coronavirus quarantine.  SO… make it count.  Be mindful of how you spend your time.  By that, I just mean do things with a purpose.  It will be easy to lounge around and ignore your friends, your homework or your health.  But time is a great gift and I encourage you to use this time well.  You don’t know how excited I would be if you were to decide to train for a 5K or write a short story or poem, or create a painting, learn to play guitar, or whatever project excites you.
In our Sunday school, we had just begun a series for Lent on Sabbath for busy teens.  Suddenly, you aren’t as busy as you were, and find yourselves on an enforced Sabbath.  Be intentional while you observe it and make this a memorable time.  Reach out to one another. Be kind to one another.  And let me know what you’re up to.

See you soon, I hope,

Soccer Rob
C.S.Lewis Reading Group

Lewis is one of my favorite authors.  Maybe you know him because you've read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but he has also written numerous books about the Christian faith, explaining how the life of faith looks in relation to the gospel.  I'm suggesting we read a book called The Screwtape Letters.  It is a somewhat funny book containing the fictional letters written from one devil to another as they try to prevent a human from becoming a Christian.  It is a study in human behavior, particularly the things we tend to do when we aren't our better selves.  It is critical that we nurture our most loving selves while we are confined, disconnected and bewildered by the changes around us.
If you want to join me, there's two things you need to do. 1)Provide me with an email address so that I can send you a Kindle copy of the book. 2)Watch that email for an invitation to join a Zoom online meeting so we can talk about the book.  We'll do a chapter a week and get together online on Wednesday nights around 7pm.
Some other items...

I'll post other things I find as we go along.

The first is a workbook. Though it seems aimed at younger children, you might be able to adapt it for youth.

Video Scavenger Hunt

Make a video of yourself (get a helper if need be) doing the following things.  The videos don’t need to be particularly long or complex.  Once we have a collection of videos, I’ll try to splice them together and share some of them among the group.  You can send them to me at rob@fcctyler.org or if you want to follow our Instagram at fcc_tyler_youth I’ll make a group chat that we can all upload videos and messages to.  Send me at least 5 videos, with real content, and I’ll send you a gift card (amount to be determined based on the submissions).

Here is the list:
**Reading from your Bible-some suggested readings…  Revelation 7:9-12 or Matthew 21:8-10 or Luke 19:37-40 or John 12:12-17 or Mark 11:7-10
**Tell me at least three things you are watching on Netflix or other streaming services.
 **Playing a game
 **Playing a musical instrument
**Reading from whatever book you are reading right now
**Tell me what you are grateful/thankful for
**Give tips on how to survive the quarantine
 **What’s for dinner?
**Doing something that helps someone else.
**Building a toilet paper pyramid (are you hoarding or not?)
 **Playing with your pet.
**Act out a Bible Story (for the kids) use puppets or Lego figures?
 **Exercising
**Reciting a poem or telling a story
 **Sing a song
Sabbath for Teens

We only got to have one lesson in our Lenten series, but it was a good one.  Now that we have more time to practice Sabbath, it's more important than ever to be intentional in our practice, so I'm uploading all the lessons so you can take a look at them.  If you want to go through them together, send me an email address and I'll invite you to a Zoom online meeting on Sunday evening around 4pm.
